It appears that the struggle against the increasing air pollution problem in Gujarat’s capital city is getting more serious. As a strong measure against growing particulates in the environment, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) just performed a highly publicized inspection operation targeting the Gota ward, leading to the prompt shutdown of three major building projects. The AMC operates this specific project as part of its broader mission to enforce Good Construction Practices Policy, which aims to mitigate the impact of current real estate market activities.
Surprise Inspections Lead to Immediate Work Halt
The operation was carried out by a dedicated task force from the Estate and Town Development Officer (TDO) Division of the North West Zone. On Saturday, April 4, 2026, during surprise inspections, authorities found many developers in violation of prescribed guidelines safety and environmental guidelines. The inspectors discovered multiple violations, including the failure to install essential green netting and barricading systems to prevent dust from disappearing into the surrounding air.
Identifying the Defaulters: Evera, S Plus, and Solo Bliss 2
Three projects which include Evera, S Plus and Solo Bliss 2 received development restrictions from civic authorities, who imposed penalties. The developers of these projects failed to provide adequate protection against construction-related process. This prompted the civic body to seal the projects and impose a ban on further development until adequate pollution control measures are implemented. The AMC North West Zone specified that these requirements function as mandatory requirements which all developers must meet before they can operate their businesses within the city. These requirements are crucial as the city prepares to host international events, including the Commonwealth Games 2030.
Heavy Fines for Road Spillage and Traffic Hazards
The authorities imposed significant monetary penalties for road pollution and the resulting traffic hazards. The authorities imposed two penalties on Solo Bliss project because its primary violation involved the absence of green agro nets which resulted in project suspension. The AMC imposed a penalty of ₹1 lakh because heavy construction materials had spilled onto the public road. The spillage posed a threat not only to the environment but also to motorists’ safety.
Broadening the Enforcement to Bodakdev and Thaltej
It is important to note that such inspections were not confined to the Gota area. For instance, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation conducted inspections on other important zones such as Bodakdev and Thaltej. In the Bodakdev zone, one contractor was fine ₹50,000 for excessive air pollution caused to improper material handling. In Thaltej, another contractor incurred a fine of ₹1 lakh because the project did not comply with fundamental safety standards. Such fines are an effort by the AMC to ensure that non-compliant developers’ financial penalties, acting as deterrents.
Addressing the 16% Construction Dust Contribution
New environmental research indicates that 16% of respirable particulates in Ahmedabad are caused by construction dust, making it the third largest cause of pollution behind vehicles and industrial activities. As such, the AMC has introduction mandatory requirements stipulating that any construction site above 20,000 square meters must be equipped with real-time sensors for dust, CCTV camera installations, and electronic display board indicating air quality information. The recent action by the TDO department in Gota is therefore an attempt to remind smaller construction sites of dust mitigation practices.
Clearing Encroachments for Smoother Urban Mobility
Alongside the pollution control campaign, AMC staff also removed illegal encroachments from the 12-meter-wide service road linking KD Hospital and Ognaj Circle. In many cases, such encroachments worsen traffic congestion and contribute to dust formation due to idling vehicles idling in place. In this way, by combining road cleaning with sealing off the construction sites, the municipal administration is trying to adopt a two-track strategy in its bid to enhance the "liveability index" of North West Zone.
The Road Ahead for Ahmedabad’s Real Estate Sector
For the real estate market in Ahmedabad, recent developments should be viewed as a strong warning signal. Gone are the times when developers could carry out projects without worrying about any health and safety standards, as the city increasingly adopts stringent measures regarding urban pollution control and urban safety management. At present, the message from the AMC administration is that developers must allocate funds for purchasing HDPE green nets, mist machines, and mechanized sweepers to prevent costly project delays and fines.
